This one is not easy to describe; its not movie music in the same sense as, say, John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith or what have you. There are no melodies really, no music(!) in a sense. What we have here for the most part are musical notes, trying to establish an atmosphere. It succeeds to a certain extent; the film is apparently a horror film and the music does disorient you (although its not scary in the slightest). Yup, one listen is guaranteed to get you scratching your heads as if to ask "Wha th'fuck is this...?"

I cant say that you will like this, you probably wont ever listen to it more than once, but here it is anyway...

I recently signed up for a subscription to a bona fide fanzine devoted to the German Edgar Wallace films. A fanzine fer chrissakes. A PRINTED fanzine, just like in the old days, before computers, before the Internet. It seems like printed fanzines have become an endangered species, if they are not already extinct. Even Psychotronic magazine recently closed up shop (that was a real blow for me).

So, in this day and age, when someone comes along, starting a printed(!) 'zine dedicated to the German Edgar Wallace films, you bet I am gonna give my $8 (for five issues).

I just received the first 'ish and its not a bad start; looking forward to future issues. Anyway, it put me in the mood for some music from these Edgar Wallace films so I dug this disc out.

There's a lot of Morricone going 'round; interested parties should check out the Morricone-only blog called fittingly enough, Morricone Lover, for a start and, while you are at it, head over to You Dont Have to Visit This Blog, where you will find even more Morricone.

As much as I love 'im, I dont have much Morricone, which is to say, I pretty much have the scores that can already be found elsewhere. I dont have the really obscure, not easily obtainable titles.

I am hoping that one day someone will share the more hard-to-find titles like Bloodline (1979), Sahara (1983), Copkiller (1983), Hundra (1983), A Time to Die (1982), Windows (1980) and on and on and on...ultimately, I want to hear everything the man ever did.

I'm not sure if this is exactly a soundtrack - according to the Score Baby review of this disc, Peter Thomas (composer of scores for many a European B-movie) is quoted as saying of the disc "This compilation is a certain kind of chic, nutty, bizarre, spheric, sinful-horny music out of the erotic soundscape of the acoustic - phonetic - hotline - lounge - party - music universe."

I bet the liner notes would help out here but this disc is another that I received in a trade many years ago and the liner notes did not come in the trade.

Still, its Peter Thomas, after all, which is reason enough to give it a listen...

Some folks have asked if cover art is available for some of these postings.

Well, I had been hoping for a new scanner / printer / fax machine from the Mrs. for xmas but unfortunately I guess she didnt get my hints (thanks for those dress shirts hunney! luv yuuuuuuu!).

So I will be getting that scanner slash whatever sometime soon (when the xmas bills are paid off) at which time I will start including the cover art with the tunes.

Until then, we will have to make do with whatever related images I can crib from 'round the net.

The Swarm (1978) / music by Jerry Goldsmith

Its not the worst / funniest of the Irwin Allen disasters - that honor falls to Allen's next one, the killer volcano flick (starring Paul Newman during a rough patch in his career) When Time Ran Out (which by the way featured a score by Lalo Schifrin - I cant remember if that score was any good; anyone? anyone?).

The Swarm has its moments of course, courtesy of the really cheesy effects, hilarious dialogue or (over)acting by the cast .

I dig Michael Caine and will watch him in just about anything (OK except Jaws The Revenge).

Heck, I even liked (yes, actually liked) Beyond The Poseiden Adventure when it first came out (score by jerry Fielding: anyone? anyone?).

Jerry Goldsmith's great score belongs to an entirely different (i.e. more serious, all 'round better) flick. Maybe Jerry didnt have any idea of the quality of the film he was composing for; he is most definately not slacking here...

Being a huge James Bond fan as a kid, I was naturally compelled to watch every Bond imitator that came along, whether it was James Coburn's Derek Flint, Dean Martin's Matt Helm or even Sean Connery's real-life brother (!) in the film entitled OK Connery (sometimes alternatively known as Operation Kid Brother).

The actual quality of the Bond imitators varied, of course, but even the really bad Bond imitators had some really cool music to save it from being completely worthless.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a great example of a Bond imitator - it is a damn good television series and it contains great music (by various composers including the great Jerry Goldsmith himself).

The French Connection was on cable today and I happened to catch a few minutes while doing those after-shower male grooming things (as much grooming as one does on a vacation day with nothing planned except going to the shopping outlets to treat oneself to some late xmas presents) and next thing, of course, im looking for this disc of Don Ellis' music.

The French Connection is such a great film, I dont even hafta tell you its a great film, you already know its a great film, everyone knows how great a film it is, its one of those great films that is so great, its great no matter how many times you see it (Jaws, another example)...hackman, scheider, frog one, subway, car chase...sidebar: has anyone ever realized how many great films roy fuckin scheider was in: the aforesaids Jaws & French Connection, but also Marathon Man, All That Jazz, Sorcerer, Jaws 2 (dont say a word, its got its own iconic moments, like when the shark eats the helicopter; or like when roy tricks the shark into eating the power cable at the end), and yet does anyone ever even think about roy scheider...anyway, i digress...yes, The French Connection, great film...

Don Ellis' music is an integral part of the success of the film, from that urgent pounding opening titles track, to those ominous basso notes that cue suspense, to the building jazz progession during Doyle's foot chase of Frog One that ulimately leads into the subway scene...

No one really talks about The French Connection II, and perhaps there is good reasons for that: it is a much more conventional Hollywood movie, pretty much just a showcase for Hackman, but the final shot of the film with the sudden cut to the end titles is a classic piece of 70s filmmaking...

Ellis' music for the sequel continues the style established in the first film, jangly jazzy stuff, just listen to the opening titles track, and the tracks entitled Popeyes Montage, and the end titles track.

While Heston's presence always ensures a certain entertainment value, I actually prefer the version of the source material (the book I Am Legend by Richard Matheson) that starred Vincent Price entitled Last Man On Earth; it was much creepier and more atmospheric than this Heston flick.

fuck Its A Wonderful Life, Im gonna keep the pictured flicks playing over the next few days (in between the football games); happily, the in-laws actually love my holiday marathons so its going to be one of those moments: everyone will be sitting in the living room, in front of the warm cracklin fire, exhausted, feeling full in the stomach after that meal, maybe someone is sitting by the lighted tree fiddlin contentedly with one of the presents they received, nomar the cat (who also received presents) asleep on someone's lap and theres this gory 80s slasher flick playing, an ultra sleazy one with edward purdom pursuing a psycho killing santa clauses (one great scene that is 100% make-your-own-Mystery Science Theater-script-for-this, the psycho graphically castrates one unlucky santa victim, and another scene has yet another santa victim's face pushed into the roasting chestnuts)...

check out the review for this score at the informative, highly readable, much recommended Score, Baby website (scorebaby.com) and you will see that the original release had bad sound quality; ITS NOT MY FAULT!

nevertheless, its a smokin' score (sprinkled with choice dialogue from the film), worth at least one listen, if only to gauge your tolerance for the sound.

The Black Windmill (1974) / music by Roy Budd

Incredibly, a film by Don Siegel (Dirty Harry, Charley Varrick, The Beguiled, Telefon), it stars Michael Caine and Donald Pleasance, and...it blows. I saw this on the now-defunct Mystery cable channel and it was pretty much dead-on-arrival: uninvolving, boring. I did a double take when I saw Don Siegel's name attached as director.

Roy Budd's score does what it can to give the film a jolt and get it moving but its a losing battle (its not Budd's fault, believe me).

Someone on the You Dont Have to Visit This Blog site asked if anyone has Budd's Tomorrow Never Comes.

I'd like to hear that one but I'll also toss out - does anyone have Budd's scores for any of the following: Paper Tiger; The Sea Wolves; Soldier Blue; that Sinbad movie (I had seen this on the Forum just as it went kablooey and I didnt get to it in time).

I have Budd's score for Fear is the Key so if anyone wants that one, just let me know.

look, i'm hoping he actually pulls it off...

the very idea of Rocky Balboa (an aged, puffing Rockhead still fighting in the ring after six(!) movies) sounds like something Mad magazine did with artwork by Mort Drucker when the first Rocky movie came out (30 years ago!!!).

but im behind him (am I the only one, really?), i think the idea has promise but he's gotta do it right...it could go either way: hilarious good (Rocky III), hilarious bad (Rocky IV) or Uh-Oh (Rocky V).

I think this post has been superceded and made somewhat irrelevant by releases of full cds devoted to the complete scores for Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia and Fielding's unused score for The Getaway.

Still, this post does contain Fielding's music for James Toback scripted / Karel Reisz directed The Gambler which, as far as I know, is still unavailable elsewhere.

I dont have the full cds of The Getaway or Bring Me The Head... so this post is for everyone in the same boat as me. As we wait for another blog to post these full cd releases, hopefully this post will tide us over for now.

I actually just discovered I had this; its been so long since I first added it to my collection and it musta simply got buried in the pile. how could i let this one, a jerry goldsmith score, disappear like that without ever wondering where the hell is was?

kind of an like an unexpected xmas present, I guess...

This is my second VINYL RIP (and in 320kbs to boot).

I think you will find improved sound here over my last vinyl rip (The Boys From Brazil post way down below) as I discovered that if I simply turn up the volume on the stereo, the digital recording of the track will benefit.

Wisdom: it comes to us suddeny.

The (slight) down side here is that this LP was not in as pristine shape as the Goldsmith LP - on my Ruling Class LP, there are just a few skips to which a note of music or a word of dialogue may fall victim. Nevertheless, I thought this score was rare enough to warrant a posting no matter the less than perfect condition.

Gene Siskel (god bless 'im) put me onto this flick - I was a big fan of Siskel & Ebert (more Siskel than Ebert), back in Siskel & Ebert's glory days, when they were still on PBS. I remember it was Siskel who brought this to viewers attention, saying it should be rediscovered on video. And he was right. This flick is one of the funniest I have ever seen (if a bit long). Peter O'Toole was Oscar nominated for his pull-out-all-the-stops performance; he sings, he dances, he's hilarious, he's chillingly psychopathic.

The film breaks into spontaneous song & dance at the most unexpected moments.

The soundtrack LP features lots of O'Toole's dialogues (a great way for you to sample his performace) and the original songs that pop up. Highlights are O'Toole singing The Varsity Drag and My Blue Heaven.

Just wanted to throw this request out there.

While posting the score to Witness (see below) and having received The Mosquito Coast from one of the visitors to the blog, I came to hankering for Mr. Jarre's score for The Year of Living Dangerously.

Its the usual story - I had this one a long time ago, and I remember I really enjoyed the music back then. I havent heard this one in quite some time but hopefully the music will still stand up.

So, if anyone has this one and wouldnt mind sharing, i would greatly appreciate it.

Witness (1985) / music by Maurice Jarre

Another of my fave scores, and yet another from Mr. Jarre.
The score is composed using synthesizers but fear not, there are beautiful passages throughout this score. Even removed from the visuals, a track like "Building the Barn" has a real sweeping...i dunno, majesty (for lack of a better word).

A great companion score to The Mosquito Coast.

Just a note that I had posted some requests for scores and all have been graciously donated by some really nice folks.

I really want to say again to everyone who provided these scores that I am very, very grateful for your providing these scores.

Equus (1977) / music by Richard Rodney Bennett

Few things sound sweeter than Richard Burton's voice when it wraps itself around worthwhile material. It should be noted here that few things sound more hilarious than Richard Burton's voice when it is defeated by really lousy material (witness the oft mentioned Exorcist II: The Heretic, or Circle of Two, or The Klansman).

Equus (the play; the film) is great material.

This soundtrack features clips from Burton's monologues in the film and I have to tell you, I listen to those more than I do the actual music by Richard Rodney Bennett. When there is overlap and Burton is throwing down accompanied by the music, its almost like a poetry slam.

Otherwise, the music, on its own, is a kind of melancholy, faux classical, all the time played in lower registers. There are some great passages but it often becomes monotonous - the music needs Burton's angst to really soar.

Check this out - I bet you will be editing Burton's monologues out for use in your mix cds...

This post comes to us via one of the visitors to the blog - a big shout out to Cedric for sharing this Michael J Lewis score.

Has anyone even seen this film? I remember it was out on video back in the heyday (what WASNT on video back then) but has since fallen into oblivion.

What a cast tho - in addition to Moore, you have Rod Steiger (who usually plays the simplest roles way WAY over the top, so his presence is promising), Art Carney(?!?!), and Elliot Gould(!!!!!!!). The mind reels at the thought of the acting fireworks...

I've only listened to portions of this score so far - theres a smokey saxophone weaving around a drum machine in some parts. Looking forward to hearing the rest.

If you have the Vampyros Lesbos disc, you know what to expect here (some tracks from that cd appear here also).

I happen to dig this trippy dance music; its great for playing on long bike rides, but also to play at the gym while spending time on the treadmill: you have this playing on your walkman while you check out the chicks working out around you and viola, you create your very own Franco movie in your head.

One image accompanying this post is the cover of the cd; the other is completely irrelevant to the cd and I dont think it is a Franco film (I just like the poster).

Magnum Force (1973) /music by Lalo Schifrin

My fave Dirty Harry movie.

Yes, yes Dirty Harry (the first one) is a much better film all around (Don Siegel's master craftsmanship has it all over Ted Post's hack directing) but I still love the story / screenplay (by John Milus and Michael Cimino!!!) and the Harry Callahan character wouldnt wear out its welcome until Sudden Impact which, outside of the iconic "Make My Day" quote and maybe that .44 Auto Mag(num) that Callahan carries around in this one, its really an atrocious film (its a slog to get through & the action scenes are really limply staged). Pls lets not mention The Dead Pool where Eastwood looked old & disinterested and the plot has a car chase involving a remote control toy model car!!! Oy!

Magnum Force also sports my fave Dirty Harry score. Yes, yes Dirty Harry (the first one) had a classic score but this Magnum Force score has a propulsive kick to it. Just listen to that Main Title theme!

Now here's a question: is the score to The Enforcer floating around out there? I dont think it had an official release but maybe someone has the score (more complete than the few tracks that were tasted on the Dirty Harry Anthology cd that was out a while back...)

First things first: This is a VINYL RIP! I wouldnt post it unless I thought that it came out in reasonably good quality, but lets keep in mind that I am the guy who listens to audience recorded bootlegs of his favorite rock performers and has no qualms about the sound.

I dont think that this score is out on cd but can anyone weigh in on that point?

Aside from the presumed rarity, the score itself is just one of Goldsmith's absolute best; that recurring main title waltz-like theme is to die for and the ominous foreboding suspense motifs are some of my favorite movie music cues ever.

No question - its worth the few clicks and pops of the vinyl.
If you find yourself checking this one out, be sure to come back and leave a comment so I get an idea of how this sounds (again, I think its good for now, until someone can share a cd quality clean crisp sounding take on this one).

Soylent Green (1973) / music by Fred Myrow

As promised, here is the score to the classic Charlton Heston flick (by the same composer who did the score for Phantasm, as if you didnt know).

The film was a 4:30 (afternoon) movie perennial, as were Heston's other early 70s sci-fi flicks (The Omega Man; the two Apes films Heston was in), so, even 28+ years after I first watched these flicks, I wont say anything bad about any of 'em, and I wont listen to anyone dissing Heston (and that even includes Airport 1975 and Earthquake). These were my first steps into sci-fi during my pre-teen years, and, as such, scenes Heston driving around a deserted Los Angeles in Omega Man, or the giant scoop loaders spooning up gaggles of people in Soylent Green, are just indelible images that fed my imagination and pointed me to the genre (first to the source novels for each of these films and just going from there). Oh yeah, and even at that early age, I enjoyed the inherent camp value of Heston's exaggerated macho.

Like the score for Demon Seed, this score for Soylent Green is not your ordinary score; musical passages (jazzy or symphonic classical) are often overtaken by passages of discordant notes/sounds. These scores for Demon Seed and Soylent Green are required un-easy listening.

This was part of a cd that also included the score for Soylent Green (music by Fred Myrow) - I was going to post the complete cd (both scores) but again the one file with the complete cd was too big for uploading so I need to break it up like this.

I will post the score to Soylent Green tomorrow.

Oh, and like with the McQ upload, audiograbber was misreading / mislabeling tracks again (putting the name of the song in the Artist column and the name of the Artist in the Track Title column & vice-versa, and never consistently) and again, I am rushing to go to bed, so I didnt correct the labeling.

McQ (1974) / music by Elmer Bernstein

Its not just that the then 67-year-old, past-his-prime-and-looking-it John Wayne was making like Dirty Harry; the cherry on top, the thing that causes McQ to bring about a warm smile from the viewer, is that the filmmakers paired the tough talking septuagenarian with a funky theme song. The main title is just such an ass-kicking theme, complete with some wah-wah guitar, all in the service of introducing the big lug Wayne.

I dont know about you, but seeing Wayne playing a modern day big city cop, beating up on the criminal element, fighting off the advances of chicks who are lusting for him(!?!?!??), partaking in car chases (he drives a Trans Am Firebird 400!), and tossing off the occasional bon mots in his patented speech patterns is what cinema is all about for me.

Lucky for us, Wayne didnt stop with this flick - his next, Brannigan, explored similar territory, with the added bonus that he goes to London(!) to beat up on the limeys.

NOTE: Audiograbber had trouble reading the disc info on this one so the titles of the tracks are wrong or misnumbered; nevertheless this is the complete score.

I picked up the score to Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter some time ago, I think on the late, greatly missed Dust to Dust blog.

Then, very recently, I found the score to Cimino's Year of the Dragon on Cheef Brody's Rare Score blog (THANK YOU SO MUCH Cheef Brody!).

So I am hoping to complete the Cimino triptych and hopefully locate the long missing score to Heaven's Gate. Say what you will, I love the movie.

I should have more of Hermann's scores than I currently do; unfortunately, I only have a few, and all are from the 1970s. Given that the Hermann scores I do have consist of Taxi Driver and Obsession (among a few others, posting soon), I think I will do just fine on a desert island with just these scores.

The score for Brian Depalma's Obsession is simply a gorgeous score; its scary, menacing, suspenseful but always filtered with romantic melodys. The movie would not work as well as it does without this score.

NOTE: The score comes in two (2) parts because the disc is otherwise too large a file.

P.S. - I dont have Hermann's scores for Its Alive or It Lives Again so if anyone has them and wouldnt mind sharing, I would greatly appreciate it.

Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) / music by James Horner

My second favorite James Horner score, after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - maybe cuz these scores sound so much alike?

I also have a soft spot for the film - maybe cuz of Sybil Danning and her choice of wardrobe in the film?

This score was actually paired with Horner's score for Humanoids from the Deep, which I really wanted to include in this post just to showcase some images / artwork from this quintessential exploitation-movie fave (images with, y'know, chicks in bikinis, chicks in the nude, tacky monsters attacking chicks in bikinis, tacky monsters attacking chicks in the nude, etc). However, there was a limit to the size of any one file we can upload so maybe I will get to Humanoids later this week.

Bronson! Goldsmith!! Caboblanco!!! 192kbs!!!!

The film is one of Bronson's more obscure flicks, impossible to find now that the golden age of videocassettes is behind us (even second hand, used videos are a thing of the past). Consensus around the net is that the flick pretty much sucks, but that didnt stop Jerry Goldsmith from crafting one of his greatest scores (yeah, i said it).

The main title theme alone is a beaut, incorporating a latin amercan sound (and establishing the locale of the film). From there, goldsmith weaves bits of the old chestnut "The Very Thought of You" throughout parts of the score, creating a very romantic atmospehere (as the film is a pastiche i.e. rip-off of Casablanca, I guess this is the attempt to top "You Must Remember This" from that earlier film...).

I wanna see the film (1) cuz its Bronson and its a Bronson film I havent seen and every Bronson film must be seen once; and (2) I wanna see how this score is used in the film.

If you have seen this film and wanna share your thoughts, I would love to hear about the film...

OK I think I have figured out where I made the mistake in setting up the Audiograbber and the LAME encoder and thus, why the music was only encoding at 56kbs.

** Can someone let me know that the mp3s are now encoded at 128kbs?

Once I know that things are looking better, I will go back and re-do the other titles. If anyone has a specific title that they want re-done and just dont want to wait for, let me know and I do that one as quickly as possible.

Diamonds (1975) / music by Roy Budd

Hands down the best music score for a heist film ever. This one has got funk, jazz, some bossa nova...and yes, and some unfortunate vocals by a group called The Three Degrees (who?). Skip the vocals and focus on Budd's cracklin instrumentals; guaranteed they will send you out the door to steal a hefty amount of jewels.

The movie features Robert Shaw; Richard Roundtree, Barbara Hershey, and Shelly Winters (!). Even better: it was directed by Menahem Golan, one-half of the creative genius behind the great Cannon Films outfit and the directorial auteur behind Chuck Norris' The Delta Force and Stallone's Over The Top. And, of course, I havent seen it (why arent these great films available?!?!?!?!)

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) + Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1974) / music by Tom Scott & Leonard Rosenman, respectively

Yeah, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is my favorite of the sequel films and my vote for the best. Its got the best cast (Don Murray; Hari Rhodes; Severn Darden; Riccardo Montalban and Roddy McDowell in his greatest role as the son of the character he played in the first film!); its not groaningly silly like the previous entry, Escape from the Planet of the Apes; it cleverly sets up the full circle back to the events of the first film; and it has the best music score.

Battle for the (Yadda Yadda Yadda), on the other hand, is one deadly dull affair; the most that can be said is that affords Claude Akins his greatest role as an army general gorilla and the film contributed the classic "Ape Shall Not Kill Ape" line to the popular lexicon. But yeah, thats it...the series ran out of ideas, and its all just deja vu and been there, done that.

Conquest of the (y'know) has the best score, but I dont recall my favorite bits of music appearing on this disc. I havent listened to this in a while so I could be wrong (I am gonna take a listen now).

The music for Battle for the etc etc is....*yawn*...

Anyone remember Ape for a Day? All five films in the Planet of the Apes saga, back to back, IN A MOVIE THEATER!!!!! nowadays you only get to see one film at a time, and its $11, and dont get me started on the movie theaters themselves...

This disc features the complete score to the 2nd best of the sequel films and also features the mind control SFX sounds featured in a movie (!) and the complete LP version of teh soundtrack complete with dialogie from the film !!!!!!!

So if this is the 2nd best of the sequel films, what is the best of the sequel films?

Russ Meyer's Vixen! (1968) / music by William Loose

Yeah, just an excuse to post some titilating photos :) (an admittedly bad pun only Russ would enjoy?)

I have only seen a few of Russ Meyer's films (Faster Pussycat Kill Kill; Beyond the Valley of the Dolls) and, while I have enjoyed those few on a certain level, I have never been in a rush to see the rest of his oeuvre. I guess Im just not a big tit fan. Keira Knightley - yes, those are the kinds of tits i like: small, petite, the nipples become hard at the touch...

Nevertheless, Russ and his films have interested me enough to pick up Big Bosoms and Square Jaws: The Biography of Russ Meyer by Jimmy McDonough - its a great read that really paints a vivid portrait of Russ and what went into the making oh his films.

Jimmy McDonough also wrote an even better bio of Andy Milligan (The Ghastly Ones: The Sex Gore Netherworld of Filmmaker Andy Milligan) - its better because Milligan's life was soooo off-beat and weird (Russ is positively straight-laced by comparison). Andy and those who entered his life are an amazing cast of oddball characters. Its a hilarious, sad, sordid read - seek this one out.

another film I am dying to see. the poster art for this flick suggests its a James Bond wannabe, right down to the promise of a great boat chase through amsterdam(!). former bond villain Vladek Sheybal even appears in this flick.

Piero Piccioni's score is just cool lounge music action cues (there are some quiet interludes as well); check this out and allow your mind to score that action film you have been thinking of making.

Until September (1984) + Starcrash (1979) / music by John Barry

I know, I know: ANOTHER John Barry. Honestly, I am just picking things off the shelf and, if I havent seen that particular title offered on any of the usual suspects of blogs similar to this one, then I am content to just post that day's pick.

The score for Until September is a great example of why I love John Barry; no one else can do the lush, romantic music in quite the same way. The tinkling piano of the main theme always makes me swoon.

At the time the film was released, I had a massive crush on Karen Allen (ever since Raiders of the Lost Ark); pairing Ms. Allen with this John Barry score inspired many a romantic fantasy of my own, each infinitely more interesting and exciting than this film.

Barry's score for Starcrash comes from the same period when Barry gave us the scores to Moonraker and The Black Hole. Starcrash has many echoes of those scores, and some of the same faults - it kinda drags a bit. Whereas Barry's score for Until September is more memorable than the film itself, with Starcrash, the opposite is true: I remember the film more than the score. Maybe thats due to the fact that Starcrash has Caroline Munro wearing some nice little nothings throughout the film. Aside from that, I find these Italian rip-offs of Star Wars (such as Starcrash; The Humanoid; etc) so entertaining; I would rather watch these Italian rip-offs over any of the actual Star Wars films.

And, yes, for those people interested in such things, Audiograbber was used when ripping this disc.

I am a big fan of this movie, as it features another of Christopher Walken's patented, only - Christopher - Walken - can - get - away - with - this - schtick performances; he is absolutely mesmerizing in a role that, in other hands would be campy or foolish. but which, as Walken plays it, results in a dynamic and scary character.

Mickey Rourke, on the other hand, doesnt fare quite so well. Mickey does something weird with his lip and he speaks in a low-key, kinda retarded mumble. yeah, i know the character is meant to be a brain damaged simpleton, but still, he just looks and sounds kinda silly; its a little too much of an actor's workshop of a performance. I think Mickey also wrote the screenplay.

Director Michael Seresin creates a real downbeat atmosphere; this is not a feel-good movie. Strangely, I dont think Seresin directed another movie although he was the director of photgraphy on many of my favorites such as Angel Heart.

maybe this one is for the hardcore cult film obsessives; i'm not sure director Jean Rollin is known outside of that clique. frankly i would prefer to look at the stills from his films than the actual films themselves. usually his films are filled with naked french girls, usually they are vampires, usually they are lesbians, usually they are engaging in soft pore cornography...so the elements are there for great films right? but no, jean rollin proceeds to package the proceedings in the most laughably pretentious example of exploitation horror erotica disguised as french art film; scenes go on and on with a kind of slow-motion drugged languorousness; impossible to watch without falling asleep (nude french vampire lesbian goings-on notwithstanding).

Death Wish (1974) / music by Herbie Hancock

I love Charles Bronson; I would watch him in anything. I HAVE watched him in anything, from the great (Once Upon a Time in the West; Citta Violenta; The Evil That Men Do) to the hilariously bad (The White Buffalo; Assassination; Death Wish 3; Death Wish V: The Face of Death) to the plain bad (Messenger of Death).

Death Wish (the original) is, of course, one of Bronson's classic ones; Michael Winner is such an incredibly awful director, its a wonder that the film works at all. Maybe its simply Bronson's presence that makes the film iconic? Witness: the final shot of the film, after Bronson has been exiled from New York, and he takes aim with his fingers at some hoodlums that he has encountered in what is now his new home city.

I will go to extremes in discussing the remainder of the Death Wish series when I post the Jimmy Page soundtrack for Death Wish II at a later date cuz I love those films just as much (if for different reasons - I mean, I am not going to try to siggest that Death Wish 3 is aa good film per se, but man is it fun).

For now, here is Herbie Hancock's funky score for the one, the only, the original.

Holocaust 2000 (1977) / music by Ennio Morricone

An example of what the Italians used to do best: rip-off American films and add their own distinctive, decidely cheesy flavor to the proceedings. In this case, they ripped off the then currently popular The Omen. Directed by Albert DeMartino who had earlier ripped off The Exorcist in a suitable sleazy / cheesy style with his L"AntiChristo (1974). At the time of Holocaust 2000 (also known in some circles as The Chosen), Kirk Douglas was trying to keep in the movie-going public's favor by appearing in some commercial schlock - this flick was followed by The Fury (early Brian DePalma, very worthwhile), The Villain, a broad slapstick western directed by...Hal Needham?!?!?!?! co-starring Arnold Schwarzennegger (pre-Terminator, pre-Conan), and in a supporting role....Paul Lynde?!?!?! I havent seen it, but this could be a camp classic; and then Saturn 3, a sci-fi flick notable for having dubbed over Harvey Keitel(!), an ever-so-brief glimpse of Farrah Fawcett's nipple (and how did she get such a great tan in space anyway?), and a more prolonged glimpse of Kurt Douglas' then-64 year old ass. There's a killer robot loose in the film (lusting after Farrah's tanned nipple no doubt) but it doesnt seem very mobile so the excitement is neglible.

Anyway, Ennio Morricone contributes an effectively creepy score for Holocaust 2000. Also included here is Ennio's score for Sesso in Confessionale, which is a film I know nothing about.

A note about this download - I imported the tracks directly from an OOP cd to mp3 format, zipped them, and then uploaded via Rapidshare. Pls let me know how it sounds to your ears.

How'm I doing?

Some folks have suggested that the downloads may not have the best sound; thats possible because i am flying by the seat of my pants and figuring this out as I go along.

By all means, pls feel free to leave comments as to sound, how to improve my way of doing this.

I have been ripping the cds using Ipod, then just zipping the m4a / AAC files from there and uploading to Rapidshare.

what if i ripped the cds directly to mp3 format and then zipped?

let me play around and my next offering will hopefully be in better quality sound. I hope you visitors will nevertheless give the current downloads a try for now - if anyone requests it, I will certainly repost an upgrade of a specific title.

Holy shit...i just came from seeing Casino Royale...i-i-i'm, i dont know, i cant talk, i'm speechless...it was fucking awesome! and this from a bond traditionalist...fuck man, i'm a roger moore fan ferchrissakes! yes, yes sean connery was the best, but i'd rather watch roger moore bonds, he's the one i grew up on...i thought i was over bond after A View To A Kill (really weak, there was no hiding that roger moore was too old, the stunt men were waaaaay too visible, and having grace jones turn into a good guy at the end was even worse than turning Jaws into a good guy), but to my surprise Timothy Dalton and his Bond flicks were rather good (License To Kill especially)...then pierce brosnan came along and everything went to hell, each one worse than the last, there is not one highlight in any of pierce's movies, no set piece that keeps you talking afterwards, no memorable villains, and pierce was simply awful, he had no way with a quip (and what lame quips they were e.g. "I thought Christmas only came once a year")...ugh...pierce brosnan was the anti-christ...so now, here is the new Casino Royale, its getting good reviews, i'm still not sure if i wanna see it, the family is over for thanksgiving, so what to do after turkey dinner at 2pm, how about a movie, oh look casino royale starts relatively soon, lets go see that...and it was, just, just awesome...well, except for that opening credits sequence (maurice binder will never be replaced, and man these title songs are the worst; hard to believe but A View To A Kill is sounds like a great tune compared to just about any title song that came after) and pls PLEASE get rid of david arnold as the film composer, my god that man cannot score a bond flick! there is no lyricism or beauty to the music during the quieter moments in the film (just go back to John Barry to see what I mean) and his action cues are just brash and assaultive (go back to George Martin's Live and Let Die score to see how to do action cues utilizing your memorable title theme and of course the james bond theme itself)...i dont want to get into a full review too much right now, its still in theaters and i cant really give an in depth discussion of the film without giving away the story...but i will say this: daniel craig is really really good, very good...kudos to him for pulling this off...mads mikkelsen as Le Chiffre is one of the most intense villains in the entire series, he is a chilling, almost scary presence...i dont know the first thing about Texas Hold 'Em (the card game where Bond matches wits with Le Chiffre) but Craig and Mikkelsen make it a joy to watch the battle, i'm glad the filmmakers devoted as much time to the card game as they did, its a thrilling scene...eva green is stunning to look at, but she is not irritating in the slightest like just about every other woman in the series....and the stunts are - wow!, there hasnt been a stunt set piece worth mentioning since the Dalton films (e.g. the fight while dangling out of an airplane from The Living Daylights; the chase with tanker trucks from License To Kill)...one day, after the film has passed from theaters (and hopefully made a gazillion dollars), i will devote more time and space to talk about the film in more detail, but for now, i will just suggest that you go see it (what else is out right now anyway? another jerry bruckheimer production? pass!)...after casino royale, james bond will return, and you know what, i'll be waiting...

Stardust Memories (1980) / Various Artists

My absolute favorite Woody Allen film.

I wasnt aware that this soundtrack had a release until a co-worker brought in a cd that comes from Germany; very skimpy packaging (the cover has a photo of Allen which, if its from a film, I dont recognize which one it is - Allen appears to be sitting in a giant spider web; the title given for the cd on this front cover is Woody Allen's Memories; backcover with tracklist has the title Woody Allen's Film Stardust Memories; the actual cd has the same latter title). If anyone is interested in the cd art, just send me a note and I will post it so you can see it.

Its a short cd, but I love every song that appears here.

Robert Altman 1925 - 2006

I was never an outright Altman acolyte; I've seen more movies by Altman that left me saying "Huh? Wha-?" (e.g. Quintet; somebody PLEASE explain the movie to me!) or just plain-and-simply bored out of my skull (Health; A Wedding; Gingerbread Man; Cookie's Fortune; Dr T and the Women, Pret-a-Porter - does it seem like I am picking on his later work?).

Nevertheless, there is no denying Altman contributed important vocabulary to the maturation of film during the late 60s / early 70s.

Of Altman's films, the ones I treasure the most are the stage-derived ones e.g. Secret Honor, Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, and Streamers). Add to this (short) list Short Cuts, most of Popeye, That Cold Day in the Park, and, yes, MASH.

A new Altman project always generated anticipation as the release approached; you could never write him off. I was in London last year and went to see his production of Arthur Miller's Resurrection Blues. Alas, a few scattered good performances (Maximillian Schell was a riot) did not overcome a heavy-handed, plodding script (maybe Miller is more at fault here than Altman?). Side note: I actually brushed past Altman in the lobby of the theatre after the performance and apologized to him as I thought I might have bumped him too hard (I just wanted to say something to him; I couldnt exactly say that I didnt like the play) and he was quite cheerful in replying "No worries young sir."

A Prairie Home Companion was already on its way to me via Netflix as news of Altman's death started spreading. I cant wait to see it...

Here's the John Williams soundtrack to Altman's riff on Polanski's Repulsion. Altman creates a dreamlike atmosphere, telling the story through the eyes of Susanna York, whose character just happens to be going insane. Beautiful cinematography (as usual) by Vilmos Zsigmond. A cryptic movie that is worth the time spent puzzling over (unlike, say, Quintet).

Angel Heart (1987); music by Trevor Jones

Mickey Rourke was on something of a roll with memorable roles (big and small) in a number of seminal films throughout the 80s; blink-and-you-miss-him roles in Heavens Gate (yes, I am a defender of this film) and Body Heat, bigger breakthrough roles in Diner and Pope of Greenwich Village (where he showed his acting chops), and then the lead roles in the great Year of the Dragon, the iconic 9-1/2 Weeks, A Prayer for the Dying (even with the strange attempt at an Irish accent), and this film, Angel Heart.

The streak came to a screeching halt with Wild Orchid in 1990 and then he never recovered, choosing to appear in simply bad films like Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, White Sands and even a Jean Claude Van Damme film (Double Team)! Incredibly, this great actor wound up in the straight-to-video category. A sideline with boxing didnt help matters (and probably fucked up his movie star looks).

For the most part, Mickey would never to see the light of a good role again (except for very small cameos in Buffalo 66 and Animal Factory) until Robert Rodriguez used him in Once Upon a Time In Mexico and Sin City, and Mickey gave those roles everything he had - there's nothing like watching a great actor recognize a great role and rediscover the fire within; add to this a turn in Tony Scott's soon-to-be-labelled-as-a-cult-item Domino and the man just might be on a streak again. Fingers crossed.

Angel Heart is a moody noir nightmare that is all filmmaking style-over-substance, but hey, its pulp so it fits the genre. Mickey wears his usual baggy-designer-clothes-and-three-day-stubble outfit and damned makes it look fashionable. DeNiro turns in solid work (before he lost the fire and sold out). And, of course, Lisa Bonet is hot hot hot.

Trevor Jones' score conveys the nightmarescape of the film quite well, filled with forebodings, shadows, dread...it sounds a lot like his later score for Mississippi Burning.

The soundtrack integrates choice dialogue from the film, and a few blues numbers to boot.

Great stuff.

The Marseille Contract (1974); music by Roy Budd

Roy Budd has an incredible string of film scores from the 60s and 70s, including Get Carter, The Stone Killer, Diamonds, and The Wild Geese (to name but a few off the top of my head).

The music for this obscure film is just cool, cool, cool thriller film music.

The cast of this flick alone demands that I see it butI cant find it anywhere. It may have been out on videocassette (remember them) back in the heyday under the name The Destructors but who the hell can find VHS videocassettes in this day and age.

An early Jonathan Demme film.

I havent seen the film in a while but I dont really remember liking it. A Hitchcock pastiche that, as I recall, was devoid of mystery, suspense, excitement.

I like the poster tho (the one where the babe is hanging over Niagra Falls, not the one that makes the film seem like a love story).

I havent listened to the soundtrack in a while either.

Friday The 13th: A New Beginning; 5 Star Max, 1 - 2:30am -- I admit, I am a fan of the series, its followed me through puberty and into adulthood. This entry is no better or worse than the others but the gore is heavily cut; the filmmakers, however, compensate by featuring more breasts than usual...

Seed of Chucky; OuterMax 12am - 1:25am -- this franchise started out lamely and degenerated from there, only to pick up and become interesting with the fourth (!) entry and this one, the fifth of the series.

Basketball Diaries; Starz -- 12:15am - 2am -- for fans of Leo DiCaprio only; fans of the book by Jim Carroll beware cuz the filmmakers really fucked this up!

Cape Fear; Encore - 12am - 2:10am -- watchable, but overlong and DeNiro had already started the downward spiral that would lead to self-parody and, worse, Meet The Fockers.

Roy Colt and Winchester Jack; Encore Western, 2:05am - 3:35am -- a western directed by the great Mario Bava, cant wait to see this!

The Hole; Encore Mystery 1:30am - 3:15am -- keira knightley flashes her breasts; who cares about the rest of the movie?

Moving; OuterMax - 3:30am - 5:2am -- one of Richard Pryor's worst movies, an attempt at Bill Cosby family humor; this is when I firts noticed that Pryor wasnt looking too healthy...the scary thing is, Pryor did more movies after this and his deterioration (physically and comedically) is painful to watch.

On Deadly Ground; Showtime Extreme- 3am - 4:45am -- a vanity project for Steven Seagal who stars and directs and doesnt skimp on the close-ups of himself...rivals William Shatner's incredible Star Trek V for star-director narcissism. still, the film keeps the action coming and pauses the storyline for some truly surreal sequences (e.g. after being mortally wounded early in the film, Seagal has a hallucinegenic healing sequence where he dreams he fights a big polar bear for some reason; Seagal's climatic lecture on being environmentally sound - of course, by this point he had already blown up half of alaska, but his heart is in the right place, i guess).

The Devil's Advocate; Starz East, 3am - 5:30am -- late-career Al Pacino after he had descended to self-parody; unlike DeNiro, however, Pacino remains an entertaining jokester of a performer, chewing scenery with giddy abandon - the fun he is having with the role is infectious. And Keanu Reeves comes up with a good performance, free of his usual Keanu-isms.

Adrenaline: Fear The Rush; Encore Action, 3:40am - 5am -- with a title like that, you would think this action flick would move; sad to say, as directed by the prolific, if untalented, Albert Pyun, the film remains still, lifeless. a waste of former-Highlander Christopher Lambert and the gorgeous Natasha Henstridge.

Remo William: The Adventure Begins; Encore East, 5:35am - 7:45am -- an OK, should-have-been-better adventure flick that was supposed to launch a franchise. With former Bond director Guy Hamilton and former Bond scripter Christopher Wood, I thought they might get it right. Alas, they cast charisma-free Fred Ward as Remo (it doesnt take a 12 year old to tell you this guy is NOT an action icon). Joel Grey as Chiun (Remo's mentor) is the whole show. Good stunts, lousy villain.

Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia; Sundance Film, 6am - 8pm -- Directed by Sam Peckinpah, the last great Peckinpah film (after this came Convoy and, worse, The Osterman Weekend). Classic Warren Oates.

Cannonball Run II - HBO Comedy East, 7:50am - 9:45am -- this isn't a film, its anti-film. complete, total, utter, irredeemable crap. Burt Reynolds deserves to have fallen from grace for foisting this shit onto movie screens.

My Name is Nobody; Encore Drama, 10:20am - 12:20pm -- Sergio Leone produced this spaghetti western but did not direct. Still, a great western even when it relies on too-silly humor courtesy of star Terence Hill. Henry Fonda also stars, bringing a quiet dignity to his role of a famous gunfighter who just wants to retire.

Sudden Impact; ActionMax East, 10:20am - 12:30am -- outside of the classic "Make My Day" line and Harry Callahan's switch to the .44 Auto Mag weapon, the film is rather inert. bad acting (sondra locke is particularly terrible) and just plain bad directing from star Eastwood (Clint cannot direct action for his life, and his handling of the backstory for Locke's character is extremely poor). The next in the Dirty Harry Series (The Dead Pool) is even worse.

Marathon Man, ThrillerMax East - 12:30pm - 2:35pm -- a classic. every set-piece in the film is a primer for how to direct suspense (Scheider at the French opera; Schieder vs the albino; Laurence Olivier torturing Dustin Hoffman, the climatic showdown between Olivier andHoffman). you dont really notice that the plot is a bit thin. watch!

Big Bad Mama II; Showtime Extra, 11:45am - 1:25am -- belated sequel with Angie Dickinson returning 15 years after the original; she still looks hot. Better still: nude scenes for Danielle Brisbois (she from Archie Bunker's Place) and Julie McCullough (she from Growing Pains and later a Playboy spread). The great Bruce Glover also appears (fully clothed).

Girl on a Motorcycle; The Movie Channel, 1:10pm - 2:40pm -- havent seen it but its supposed to be a relic from the 1960s. Marianne faithful is indeed eyecatching so I guess I will be watching.

From Noon Till Three; Encore Western, 1pm - 2:45pm -- you can bet I will recommend you watch just about every Charles Bronson movie that comes on (even the dire Messenger of Death). I havent seen, like this one. I heard its much lighter in tone than most Bronson movies.

Carlito's Way; More MovieMax, 1pm - 2:45pm -- classic Al Pacino / Brian Depalma crime flick. Everything about this film is top notch except for the scenes with Penelope Ann Miller as Carlito's love interest. those scenes stop the film dead, but its usually not for long. absolutely incredible 15 minute chase sequence at the end.

Nixon; Encore Drama, 4:40pm - 8pm -- doesnt approach the greatness of Stone's JFK, but no one does political drama like Oliver Stone. Anthony Hopkins turns in great work as the titular character. solid supporting work from everyone involved.

Serpico (1973); music by Mikis Theodorakis

One of my favorite scores for one of my favorite films; the last four tracks of the Serpico score are always in high rotation on my mp3 player.

Also included here is Theodorakis' score for Phaedra (1962), an Anthony Perkins film directed by Jules Dassin. I must confess to never having seen the film but Theodorakis' score is quite lovely. The final track of the disc is Anthony Perkins' final scene and proves why Mr Perkins is the * shit * (i mean that in the best sense).

The Medusa Touch (1978); music by Michael J. Lewis

Richard Burton in one of his great late-career / so bad its good films.

Exorcist II: The Heretic remains the gold standard as it pairs Burton's pained line readings to some bravura if certifiably out-there filmmaking from director John Boorman (oh, and there's a great Ennio Morricone score to boot).

The Medusa Touch is more pedestrian and staid in its filmmaking and Burton seems a bit more engaged in the proceedings but he still has that very particular way with words that does nothing but turn his lines into (very quotable) camp. The memorable score by Michael J. Lewis adds a much needed dose of creepiness that really does elevate the film somewhat.

I dont think the film is out on DVD as yet (someone let me know if I am wrong about that); this is the kind of film that begs for a DVD label that does for B-flicks what Criterion does for art films.

Anyway, here's the score; listen to it with the lights out.
